AUSTIN — Texans bought more than $5.3 million worth of the new $2 Veterans Cash scratch-off lottery tickets in the game’s first month.

The Fund for Veterans Assistance will get more than $1 million of that, said state Rep. Chris Turner, D-Burleson, who helped pass legislation to create the tickets and dedicate revenue to veterans. “I am thrilled to see that the initial veterans lottery game is off to such a great start,” Turner said.

“With so many men and women returning from service in Afghanistan and Iraq joining the ranks of the 1.7 million veterans in Texas, organizations that provide aid to veterans need resources now more than ever.”

The fund will provide grants to groups that help veterans and their families with such things as transportation for health needs, job placement services, and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries, according to Turner’s office.
