Veterans’ scratch-off lottery game approved in House as time runs out

AUSTIN — A proposed lottery scratch-off game designed to raise money for veterans assistance programs squeezed through the House with one minute to spare Thursday night, gaining momentum in the closing days of the 2009 session.
“It’s just a huge victory for veterans,” said Rep. Chris Turner, D-Burleson, the bill’s House sponsor. “Fortunately, we got to it just in time.”

Honoring Texas Veterans

Chris Turner believes that our government has a duty and a responsibility to honor those who have worn our nation’s uniform and risked so much to protect our country. Chris thinks it’s disgraceful that the current legislature did not pass the bill to exempt 100% disabled veterans from property taxes, and he’ll work to pass it in the next session.
