The district includes significant portions of Arlington and Fort Worth, along with the communities of Crowley, Kennedale and Rendon and parts of Mansfield and Burleson.

According to the 2000 census, the population of District 96 was 145,625 and the district was 30 percent minority. In the last eight years, the district has grown considerably in both size and diversity, and is considered to be one of the most competitive state house districts in Texas.
