HDC Chair Chris Turner Responds to President Biden Signing Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

June 25, 2022 (TEXAS) – Today, President Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to enact several reforms aimed at reducing gun violence across the country.

Texas HDC Chair Chris Turner (D-Grand Prairie) issued the following statement in response:

“Today marks an important step forward in the fight against gun violence in our country. The passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act proves that Republicans and Democrats can work together to make our communities safer.

“This past week, Texas House Democrats took the feedback we have received from Texans across the state and called on Gov. Abbott to bring legislators back for an emergency special session to pass key gun safety reforms, including the implementation of ‘Red Flag Laws.’ With the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, there is money on the table to implement those laws, helping law enforcement keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves and others.

“The ball is in the governor’s court. Texans are looking to their state government to take action. Folks on both sides of the aisle in Washington, D.C. are showing it is possible. It’s time for Gov. Abbott to act.”

The Texas House Democratic Caucus, which is composed of all Democrats in the Texas House, serves as the group’s membership services and logistical arm, and works to support House Democrats with communications, policy, and legal resources. Chaired by Rep. Chris Turner (D – Grand Prairie), the Caucus is focused on fighting for real solutions for all Texans.
